Looking Back on 2024 with Ladysmith Dragon Boat Society
The Ladysmith Dragon Boat Society’s 2024 season has wrapped up, with Sync or Swim, Sea Dragons, and the 49th Dragons taking on both challenges and celebrations. Each team brought its own highlights to a memorable year.
Sync or Swim made waves throughout the 2024 season, competing fiercely across five Vancouver Island festivals in Victoria, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, and Comox. They consistently showcased their skill and determination, bringing home an impressive tally of three gold medals and one silver. Unfortunately strong winds cancelled the Nanaimo festival midway through, so no medals were awarded that day.
The Sea Dragons also enjoyed a season filled with teamwork and community spirit. A major milestone was their collaborative rescue training with Ladysmith Search and Rescue, where they practiced life-saving techniques in a “man overboard” drill. At Sproat Lake, the Sea Dragons held their own, proudly representing Ladysmith by taking home Second Place in the Gold Category and showcasing their passion for the sport.
Meanwhile, the 49th Dragons focused on local waters but shared in an international celebration as Coach Marnie Craig secured medals at the 2024 Club Crew World Championships in Italy. While they kept things close to home, the 49th Dragons maintained a steady rhythm and contributed to the club’s community connections.
Off the water, the society hosted numerous events, including a social gathering at Transfer Beach complete with games as well as an annual beer and burger night, which included the popular silent auction. Additionally, each team was also able to spend an evening on Bute Island, which they paddled out to for a picnic and swim.
As the season winds down, winter paddling is now in full swing—a great way to stay active and ready for spring. Whether you’re a seasoned paddler or new to the sport, winter sessions offer a chance to build skills and keep the paddling passion alive until we return to full force next season.
