Our Steerers

Steer, Guide and Navigate

In addition to dedicated paddlers, the Ladysmith Dragon Boat Society is always searching for individuals who are interested in becoming steerers for the boat.

The direction of the dragon boat’s movement is controlled by the steerer, located at the stern (back) of the boat. They’re able to manipulate the boat using a long (usually 9 feet) steering oar that’s situated in an oar lock. The oar is able to steer the boat as well as adjust the position of the boat.

A trained steerer is crucial to a good dragon boat team and is ultimately responsible for the crew’s safety on the water. They will:

  • have knowledge of the boat commands

  • understand the effects of wind and water conditions

  • collaborate with the coach and captains on where and how to run practice sessions

While previous experience on the water is beneficial, Ladysmith Dragon Boat Society will invest in training for those seriously interested in steering. It’s an excellent opportunity for those interested in being out on the water as part of the team who can’t, or aren’t able to, paddle.
